No doubt human pollution has caused the earth filthier and filthier. While the rich nations carry on dumping tons and tons of CO2 into the atsmosphere, the poorer nations keep falling down the forrest for so called 'development'. None of the countries would spend any attention on the issue of pollution.
Now the consequences of human carelessness and aparthy has started to take their tolls on the global climate changes.
The extreme weather changes thought to be dramatised by movies (like:The day after tommorow) have already started to occur all over the world.
Such global changes need urgent local actions.
Small changes can actually make big differences:
1 Plastic bags
We on average bring at least 20 plastic bags from shopping every week which would culminate into at least 1000 plastic bags a year.
Action: Since we recycle our plastic bag and reusable storage bag, we have cut down the number of plastic bags to around5 a week which we use for carrying sandwiches to work, hence which means even less plastic from buying food from the counter.
2 Paper
We have at least 2 magazines, 3-4 newspapers and many junk mails which, after reading, would become rubbish.
Action: We have a recycling bin for paper and we consciously tear off any plastic bits from the mail envelopes and recycle the paper bits plus everything else we think can be recycled. We also blocked all the junk mails and rang up the company for complaints if they breach our wishes for not receiving any junk mail.
3 Plastic bottles
Helena had one yougurt a day, our household use 1.5 l of milk a week and 1-2 cartons of fruit juices. Those containers can only bulk up our rubbish bin and end up in the land fill. These will take hundreds of years to degenerate.
Action: We collect them and throw them into the designated recycle bins for power generation .
Nevertheless, I have to admit one thing we are not good at is the car usuage and nappy use. But now I have been trying to cut down all unecessary car journeys as much as possible. We did use the washable nappies for four months but as baby nappies get dirtier (yukk!) when she gets older, we have switched to dispoable nappies. However, we have mixed the longer lasting but not eco-friendly nappies with shorter lasting but eco-friendly nappies made of recycling materials. So far such compromise has cut down half of the nappies used from the eco-unfriendly ones.
Meanwhile I would advice everybody to start doing something to protect the earth NOW before it is too late. To be honest with you, you really have no choice. Ignorance and simple laziness are not the options one can take.
The climate changes are not going to happen in the futute, it is happening now.
