As a dad, I guess I should have less challenges than my wife who now decided to try breast feeding. The biological clock of the baby is a myth to us. How Emma can wake up regularly after midnight to ask for feed is still unknown. One thing for sure is that the art of feeding is not something that can be achieved overnight. It does take several days if not weeks.
Strangely enough, none of the literature who encourages breast feeding mentioned anything about the crying period when both mum and baby do not know how to latch on and feed. They also did not mention that breast feeding is actually very painful experience despite the so called 'attachment' (yes, they did define the latching as 'attachment)' is actually a painful experience too. In addition, they did not tell you how long the baby should be fed per breast apart from some really vague advice as to just follow the flow and see how much the baby wants the breastfeeding.
One the positive side, there is no sterilisation that needs to do and we do not need to buy the formula as a replacement. In addition, all the breast milk seems to be absorbed 'completely by Emma that her nappies have been relatively 'clean', i.e. with no much smelly poo in it! i guess you can also argue that mum gives all the goody antibodies to the baby. There are some evidence that breast fed babies have less skin problems and allergies as such. But there is no mention of how long the baby should be breast fed to get the so called 'benefits'??
Now, there is a mention of breast pump and container and such, then we have to go back to the sterilisation business and storage business again...........
I should also keep the perspective right that many years ago when there is a limited facilities, equipments and so called scientific evidence of breast feeding, majority of women just got on breast feeding their babies. hence we should not get bogged down with the worries about absolutely everything.
Hence it now go back to the vague advice as : Go with the flow.
At the meantime, the whole household is turned upside down. Gone are the days that you feel under control. I literally just cope with whatever that comes to my hand that need doing...... That may be just the life I guess.....
